SitNiks
Sitka, Alaska

SitNiks is an instrumental ensemble from Sitka, Alaska, specializing in Russian and East European music. The group was formed in 2006, and started playing for various functions in 2007.

Sitka has a rich Russian history, having been the capital of Russian America in the 1800’s. To reflect that era, the SitNiks’ focus is on Russian folk music played on traditional and related instruments.

The musicians and their instruments are: Kris Fulton – prima domra; Jeanne Stolberg – prima balalaika; Michael Litman – accordion; and John Fulton – concertina.

SitNiks have been performing for numerous occasions in Sitka, as well as “live” on the local radio station, KCAW.  They also organize an annual concert during Sitka’s Alaska Day Festival in October, featuring international guest musicians and dancers.

SitNiks
are also members of the Balalaika & Domra Association of America (BDAA). Attending the annual conferences, they are able to learn more about Russian folk music and instruments. The highlight of the week-long conference is performing in the festival orchestra where musicians from all parts of the U.S. and other countries come together to play.  Sitka will be the location of the 2009 BDAA Convention and Russian Music Festival, held July 19 – 24, 2009.
